Review of the Arcade Game Bump'n'Jump

Game Title: Bump'n'Jump
Publisher: Data East
Year: 1982
ESRB Rating: N/A
Platform: Arcade
Genre: Driving Game

Bump'n'Jump has found itself in classic and retro arcades around the country. The simple game can solve your boredom for a good hour before becoming too repetitive. Competing for high scores with friends and other players can be fun pastime in the neighborhood arcade. However after dying in-game and replaying a few times, the game loses its charm and I'd imagine most people walk away to play a different game. I even admit that I probably wouldn't have played as long as I did if it weren't for the group of friends I had desperately trying to get the highest score out of the group.

The controls are very straight forward. You have a joystick to move the car and a single button to jump. The goal of the game is to bump cars off the map while jumping over hazards and obstacles on the map. If you are bumped off the map or miss a jump, the car explodes and you lose a life. After three lives, your game ends.

The game itself was the same few maps with different colors. The graphics were basic for an arcade game from 1982. The only annoying part is that with the same few maps shuffled every level, the game gets repetitive and boring fairly quickly. Occasionally the game will introduce a new obstacle such as a slippery spot on the road or trucks that can't be bumped. The levels themselves are represented as different seasons, with different conditions each season.

The music is a basic looping track that doesn't detract from the game but also doesn't enhance game play either. In a crowded arcade, you can barely hear the music anyway. The sound effects, however, really add to the game play. They actively help the player in cases such as warning of future obstacles and the player getting bumped.

If I were to change anything about the game, it would be to add more levels. I mentioned it a few times but the lack of variety leaves players bored after a while. I think if they changed the levels up a bit more and maybe added a few interesting challenges, it'd keep players hooked for longer. I also completely understand the limits that arcade games had in 1982 and that they probably couldn't fit too much more in the game. Arcade games aren't necessarily made to keep you playing for hours on hours anyway.

I personally would recommend this game. It's a fun little game to try and if nothing else, it's a good way to waste some time. Perhaps you can grab a few friends and have a friendly competition to see who can get the highest score. I like the versions in actual arcades rather than online emulators but it's possible Bump'n'Jump isn't in an arcade near you. After some research I actually found out that the game was ported for a few systems such as the Atari 2600 and the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) as well as a few others. I've never played them but I heard they made some changes in the NES version and perhaps that would be fun and interesting to play.
